Light Calcium Carbonate for Food, Pharma and Industry
Light Calcium Carbonate is a fine, white, precipitated form of calcium carbonate. Producers make it chemically rather than by grinding limestone. The process gives very fine, uniform particles and a low bulk density, which is why it is called light.
It is also known as precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). It contains about 40% calcium and carries the food additive code E170.
We stock food grade light calcium carbonate made by Penglai Marine (Shandong) Co., Ltd. in China, supplied in 25 kg bags labelled as a food additive. Wisdo Merchants Chemical Division delivers it across Kenya and East Africa from Industrial Area, Nairobi.
We also stock SOCAL P3 precipitated calcium carbonate by Imerys in 25 kg bags. Ask our sales team for its technical data sheet and confirm the grade for your application, particularly for food or pharmaceutical use.
Light vs Heavy Calcium Carbonate
Heavy calcium carbonate is ground from natural limestone or marble. In contrast, light calcium carbonate is precipitated, so it is finer, whiter and more uniform. As a result, food, pharmaceutical and high-quality industrial uses usually prefer the light form.
Features and Benefits of Light Calcium Carbonate
- Food grade: Our stock is labelled food grade for use as a food additive.
- Rich calcium source: Supplies about 40% calcium by weight.
- Fine, uniform particles: Blends smoothly and gives a soft texture.
- High whiteness: Keeps products bright and clean in colour.
- Acid neutralising: Reacts with acids, which makes it useful as an antacid and acidity regulator.

Applications of Light Calcium Carbonate
Food and Beverages
Food makers use it to fortify flour, cereals, plant milks and baked goods with calcium. It also works as an anti-caking agent, acidity regulator and white colour (E170). Explore our food and beverage ingredients.
Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care
Pharmaceutical producers use calcium carbonate in antacid tablets, calcium supplements and as a tablet filler. Toothpaste makers use it as a mild abrasive. Note that pharmaceutical products may require pharmacopoeia grades. Browse our pharma and cosmetic raw materials.
Plastics, Rubber, Paints and Paper
Manufacturers also use precipitated calcium carbonate as a fine white filler in PVC products, rubber, sealants, paints and paper. For example, PVC pipe and profile makers blend it with resin such as our DG-1000S suspension resin. For a clay-based filler, compare it with our Kenyan china clay. See our plastic and rubber additives.
Safety and Handling
Calcium carbonate is generally not classified as hazardous. Even so, it is a fine powder.
- Dust: Avoid breathing the dust. Use dust extraction or a dust mask when emptying bags.
- Eye contact: Dust may irritate the eyes. Rinse with clean water if contact occurs.
- Acids: It reacts with acids and releases carbon dioxide gas. Store it away from acids.
- Food hygiene: Use clean tools and keep it free from contamination for food use.
Always read the Safety Data Sheet before use.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store bags in a cool, dry, clean place on pallets, as the label instructs. Keep them away from moisture, acids and strong odours. Furthermore, reseal opened bags to prevent caking and contamination. Use it within the expiry date printed on the bag.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it called light calcium carbonate?
It has a low bulk density because of its fine precipitated particles. So a bag of the same weight takes up more space than ground (heavy) calcium carbonate.
Is this product food grade?
Yes. Our current stock is labelled food grade and sold as a food additive.
How much calcium does it contain?
Calcium carbonate contains about 40% calcium by weight.
Do you deliver outside Nairobi?
Yes. We deliver across East Africa and confirm freight and timelines with your quotation.
