Calcium Bentonite for Foundry, Agriculture and Industry
Calcium Bentonite is a natural clay made mostly of the mineral montmorillonite. Bentonite absorbs water and binds fine particles together. Calcium bentonite swells less than sodium bentonite but is an excellent adsorbent and binder.
We stock bentonite packed by R.H. Devani Ltd in 50 kg bags. Wisdo Merchants Chemical Division delivers it across Kenya and East Africa from Industrial Area, Nairobi.
Features and Benefits of Calcium Bentonite
- Strong binder: Holds sand and powders together when moistened.
- High adsorption: Attracts and holds oils, colours and impurities.
- Natural mineral: Mined clay with no synthetic additives.
- Versatile: Serves foundry, agriculture, oil processing and civil works.

Chemical Analysis (Certificate of Analysis)
The supplier’s Certificate of Analysis for our current bentonite stock reports the following oxide composition:
| Component | Percentage |
|---|---|
| Magnesium oxide (MgO) | 11.7% |
| Calcium oxide (CaO) | 9.85% |
| Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) | 6.75% |
| Potassium oxide (K2O) | 3.23% |
| Ferric oxide (Fe2O3) | 2.34% |
| Sodium oxide (Na2O) | 1.54% |
| Titanium oxide | 0.25% |
| Strontium oxide | 0.21% |
| Phosphorus oxide | 0.1% |
| Manganese oxide | 0.06% |
| Barium oxide | 0.03% |
The calcium oxide content (9.85%) is much higher than the sodium oxide content (1.54%), which is typical of a calcium bentonite rather than a sodium bentonite. A copy of the COA is available on request.
Applications of Calcium Bentonite
Foundry and Pelletising
Foundries mix bentonite with sand to make green sand moulds. It is also used as a binder in iron ore and feed pellets.
Oil Bleaching and Purification
Edible oil refiners and recyclers use calcium bentonite to adsorb colour and impurities. Activated grades work best for this use.
Agriculture and Animal Feed
Farmers use it as a soil conditioner and as a pellet binder in animal feeds, where approved grades are required. Browse our agricultural chemicals.
Construction and Drilling
Engineers use bentonite in sealing, grouting and some drilling applications. For high-swelling drilling muds, sodium bentonite is usually preferred. See our mining, oil and gas chemicals. For a white mineral filler, compare our Kenyan china clay.
Safety and Handling
- Dust: Natural clays can contain fine crystalline silica. Avoid breathing the dust and wear a suitable dust mask.
- Eye contact: Rinse with clean water if dust enters the eyes.
- Slip hazard: Wet bentonite is extremely slippery.
Always read the Safety Data Sheet before use.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store bags in a cool, dry place, as the bag instructs. Keep them on pallets and away from moisture, which makes the clay swell and harden.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between calcium and sodium bentonite?
Sodium bentonite swells much more in water and suits drilling muds and sealing. Calcium bentonite swells less and is preferred for adsorption and some binding uses.
Is bentonite the same as kaolin?
No. Both are clays, but bentonite is based on montmorillonite and swells, while kaolin is based on kaolinite and does not.
