Soap and Detergent Making

Safety and Handling
Caustic soda is highly corrosive. Handle it with great care.
- Severe burns: It causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear goggles or a face shield, alkali-resistant gloves and protective clothing.
- Heat on dissolving: It releases a lot of heat in water. Always add caustic soda slowly to cold water, never water to caustic soda.
- Metals: It attacks aluminium, zinc and tin, releasing flammable hydrogen.
- First aid: In case of contact with skin or eyes, wash with plenty of water, as the bag instructs, and seek medical help.
- Handling bags: Do not use hooks on the bags.

Storage and Shelf Life
Keep bags dry and tightly closed, as the bag instructs. Caustic soda absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, which makes it sticky and weaker. Store it away from acids, aluminium and zinc.
