Polyaluminium Chloride for Water and Wastewater Treatment

Polyaluminium Chloride, often shortened to PAC, is an inorganic polymer coagulant used to clean water. Polyaluminium chloride neutralises the electrical charge on tiny suspended particles, so they clump together into larger flocs that settle or filter out.

We stock Poly Aluminium Chloride Powder (PAC 30%) of medium basicity made by Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited in India. The 25 kg bag carries the Indian Standard IS 15573 mark and certification to NSF/ANSI/CAN 60, the standard for drinking water treatment chemicals. The figure of 30% refers to the aluminium oxide (Al2O3) content.

Wisdo Merchants Chemical Division supplies it to water utilities, institutions, factories and effluent treatment plants across Kenya and East Africa from Industrial Area, Nairobi.

What Is Basicity?

Basicity describes how far the aluminium chloride has been pre-neutralised during manufacture. In general, a pre-neutralised coagulant such as PAC consumes less of the water’s natural alkalinity than alum. Medium-basicity grades suit a broad range of raw waters.

Features and Benefits of Polyaluminium Chloride

  • Fast floc formation: Forms flocs quickly, which speeds up settling and filtration.
  • Wide working pH range: Generally performs over a wider pH range than aluminium sulphate (alum).
  • Lower alkalinity demand: Usually needs less pH correction than alum.
  • Less sludge: Typically produces less sludge for the same treatment result.
  • Certified for drinking water: The product is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 60.
  • Easy to dose: The powder dissolves in water to make a dosing solution.

Applications of Polyaluminium Chloride

Drinking Water Treatment

Treatment plants dose PAC to remove turbidity, colour and suspended solids before filtration. Afterwards, operators disinfect the clear water, for example with our granular chlorine disinfectant.

Wastewater and Effluent Treatment

Factories use it to clarify effluent from textile, food, paper and other industries. It also helps remove phosphates and suspended solids in sewage treatment. Browse our water treatment chemicals.

Paper Manufacturing

Paper mills use PAC as a retention aid and to support sizing. See our paper and pulp chemicals.

How to Use

First, run a jar test on your raw water to find the best dose. Then dissolve the powder in clean water to make a dosing solution, and dose it at a point with rapid mixing. Finally, allow slow mixing so the flocs can grow before settling. Never exceed the maximum dose printed on the bag for drinking water.

Safety and Handling

  • Eye and skin contact: It can irritate the eyes and skin. If contact occurs, wash with plenty of water, as the bag instructs.
  • Protective equipment: Wear goggles, gloves and a dust mask when handling the powder.
  • Corrosion: Solutions are acidic and corrode many metals. Use plastic or lined tanks and pipework.
  • Handling bags: Do not use hooks on the bags, as printed on the packaging.

Always read the Safety Data Sheet before use.

Storage and Shelf Life

Keep bags dry, because the powder absorbs moisture from the air. Store them sealed, on pallets, in a cool, covered area. Use the product within 2 years of its manufacturing date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PAC 30% mean?
It means the powder contains about 30% aluminium oxide (Al2O3).

Is it better than alum?
In many waters, PAC works over a wider pH range, needs less alkalinity and makes less sludge. A jar test confirms the best choice for your water.

Is it approved for drinking water?
Yes. This product is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 60. Follow the maximum dose on the bag.

Do you deliver outside Nairobi?
Yes. We deliver across East Africa and confirm freight and timelines with your quotation.
